Vision of Escaflowne Anime VS Vision of Escaflowne Manga
Now here's a leap from the original manga in gigantic proportions. Considering that the Vision of Escaflowne Manga only spans two volumes (yes, two!), it makes one wonder how they managed to stretch that into twenty six episodes. Answer? They didn't. The anime and manga versions are so different from each other that it's better if you think that one is not related to the other; that they just happened to share the same title.
Here are some noteable differences between the manga and the anime. Note that some are SO different, one will find it hard to believe that they are the same story. But they are. Note, some are spoilers. Read at your own risk.
- The king of Fanelia, Van's father, didn't die of disease. He was killed during the Zaiback attack in Fanelia.
- Same with the movie, Folken hates Van and wants to kill him. (I'm beginning to prefer the anime version of Folken more and more #_#) This is because their father chose Van as the next king of Fanelia rather than Folken, saying that Folken isn't fit to be king.
- The whole story happened in a few days, the few days where Earth and Gaea are the closest to each other. That was the reason individuals were able to transfer from Gaea to Earth and vice-versa.
- Van's mother was never mentioned, nor were the Draconians or Atlanteans.
- Folken was the cause of Dornkirk's death. He detached Dornkirk from all the machines that were keeping him alive.
- Hitomi's mother knows everything connected to Hitomi, the pendant, and Hitomi's grandmother.
- Other characters appear, namely Falco (a Zaibach military officer), Noir (an exuberant kid who's a genius as mechas) and his pet bird Subaru, and a female Zaibach officer who remained nameless to the very end.
- Folken led everyone to believe that he was dead by smashing the face of a man and torching the body.
- A dragon appeared on earth and was after Hitomi's pendant. It seems that dragons eat jewels.
- Allen actually came to earth. He was the one who defeated the dragon that appeared on Earth, not Van.
- The Zaibach floating fortress actually crossed the path separating Gaea from Earth. It appeared on earth a few moments after Allen did.
- During the Zaibach attack on Fanelia, the Escaflowne was stolen.
- The girl named Selena works at an inn and is a spy for the Zaibach empire. It is doubtful that she is Allen's sister.
- Gadeth is a friend of Allen, though he used to work as a mercenary for the Zaibach empire.
- A lot of characters were never part of the manga. Some of these are Merle (or any cat species, for that matter), Melerna, Prince Chid, Duke Freid, or even Dilandau! (tsk, where will we get our daily dose of madness then?!)
- Because there was never a Melerna, Chid, or Marlene, that royal scandal was never a part of the manga. Which I think is a waste since it's one of the most interesting sideplots of Escaflowne. ^_^
- Allen never had any interest in Hitomi, or anyone else for that matter. A surprise to find out that he's not a playboy, eh? ^_^
- The person that Hitomi's grandmother met in Gaea, and the same one who gave her the pendant, is Dornkirk.
- Dornkirk has Fanelian blood. He is the son of a Fanelian king and his mistress. His half brother, the king of Fanelia then, slashed him and had his body thrown at sea.
- The person who sealed Escaflowne in the first place, was Dornkirk. He then gave the key to the seal (Hitomi's pendant) to Hitomi's grandmother. The person who wants to break Escaflowne's seal and remake Gaea is Folken.
- Folken was killed went the Zaibach floating fortress collapsed.
