Vision of Escaflowne Anime VS Escaflowne (A girl in Gaea)

Compared to the manga, there are not a lot of differences in the anime and movie. Sure, the characters look a bit different with more pronounced facial features, but the movie deviates only a little in a sense from the anime. Proof is that Dilandau is as crazy as ever, or Merle as whiny with her 'van-sama!' cries.

The biggest difference probably would be Folken. He's not the misunderstood man that wishes for an end to the war and loves his younger brother like in the anime. In the movie, Folken is more vindictive, and hates Van more than anything. Though he does show some human emotion during the end (about two seconds before he dies), he despises Van with a passion.

Movie and Anime Stuff

Escaflowne - The Movie (Ultimate Edition 3-Disc Set) Escaflowne: The Perfect Collection Escaflowne - The Series (Limited Edition Boxed Set)

Some noteable differences:

  • Folken died not in Dournkirk hands, but rather in the hands of Jajuka, Dilandau's mentor. Though Folken died by a sword through his heart, same with the anime and movie.
  • Dournkirk isn't portrayed as the main villain here; Folken is.
  • More pronounced physical features. Examples are Van being 'beefier' as opposed to the skinny Van in the anime, and Allen looking more like a girl (more than the anime, if such is possible O_O ).
  • Escaflowne wasn't found in the Fanelian temple, rather it was called to appear by Hitomi unconciously.
  • Folken often consulted a female seer, a last of its race, for his battle decisions. The seer even predicted his death and opted to stay by his side when he sent her away, hinting at a possible romantic twist.
  • Escaflowne has the ability to teleport. No shining pillar of light to either.
  • Folken can astral project himself.

These are among the notable deviations of the movie from the anime. Again, compared to the manga, the difference is unremarkable. I think it is better to say that the movie is a fusion of both the manga and anime, since it incorporates ideas from both.
